Defense Base Act
The Defense Base Act (DBA) provides compensation benefits for overseas civilian workers employed on government contract when they are injured on the job.
The DBA covers the following types of employment:
- Jobs under private employers on U.S. military bases or on lands used for U.S. military purposes outside the U.S.
- Jobs with public work contracts with any U.S. government agency in activities outside the U.S.
- Jobs with contracts approved and funded by the U.S. under the Foreign Assistance Act if the contract is performed outside the U.S.
- Jobs for American employers providing welfare or similar services outside of the U.S. for the benefit of the Armed Forces
The DBA is an extension of the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, designed to provide medical and disability benefits to covered employees who have been hurt during the course of employment. The DBA also provides survivor benefits to dependents when the injury leads to death.
